Having started its activity in 1937-1938, it succeeded to Augusto César’s Asylum of Arts and Crafts, belonging to the former General Council of the District of Vila Real, and meanwhile integrated in the Misericórdia of Vila Real with all its "goods and movable assets”, with the intention of accommodating the "poor boys of the region".
There started to operate an elementary school, tailor, shoemaker and carpenter workshops, the crafts of stonework and cereals grinding, bakery and culinary services, and agricultural techniques.
The Agricultural School of Arts and Crafts, which played, over three decades, an invaluable role in the education and training of dozens of youngsters, was finally extinguished on August 23, 1967, when there were four students admitted.

Em conformidade com a alínea b) do nº 2 do art. 24º do Compromisso da Irmandade da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Vila Real, tenho a honra de convocar os Irmãos desta Instituição para uma reunião de Assembleia Geral Ordinária, que terá lugar no dia 26 de Março de 2009, pelas 17,00 horas, no Auditório do Edifício da Provedoria, sito no Largo Monsenhor Jerónimo do Amaral, com a seguinte Ordem de Trabalhos: Ponto 1 – Apreciação, discussão e votação do Relatório e Contas da Gerência do Ano de 2008 e do parecer do Definitório. Ponto 2 – Outros Assuntos de interesse para a Instituição.
Se, à hora marcada, não estiver mais de metade dos Irmãos com direito a voto, a Assembleia-Geral funcionará, uma hora depois, com qualquer número de Irmãos (ãs) presentes, conforme o nº 1 do art. 26º dos Estatutos. Nos termos do nº 1 do art. 21º dos Estatutos só poderão participar, na Assembleia-Geral, os (as) Irmãos (ãs) admitidos (as) há pelo menos três meses, que tenham as suas quotas em dia e não se encontrem suspensos. Nota: Os documentos referentes às contas de gerência podem ser consultados nos Serviços Administrativos, das 09,00 h às 17,30 horas, a partir do dia 24 de Março, próximo.

P.S. - No final das Reuniões, será servida, como vem sendo costume, uma refeição ligeira que nos permitirá conviver e fortalecer os laços da nossa Irmandade. - Permita-me lhe lembre que se aproxima a Quadra Pascal. Assim, e em conformidade com o estatutariamente estabelecido, vamos organizar a “Procissão do Enterro do Senhor”, no dia 10 de Abril, Sexta-Feira Santa, às 17,30 horas. Fica, desde já, convidado (a) a tomar parte, acompanhando-nos pelas ruas da Cidade.
De acordo com o nº 4 do Artigo 27º do Compromisso da Santa Casa da Misericórdia, publicita-se a Convocatória da Assembleia Geral Extraordinária, que terá lugar em 14 de Julho de 2016, às 17.30 horas no Auditório do Edifício Sede da Misericórdia, sito no Largo Monsenhor Jerónimo do Amaral.
Although the Divine Providence Hospital constitutes the main establishment of the Misericórdia of Vila Real during the 19th and 20th centuries, the truth is that the Misericórdia, in the 20th century, created and welcomed services in order to respond to situations concerning social needs: in a first stage, under the objectives of the assistance reform established by the New State (Portuguese Dictatorship), by Law No. 27 610 of April 1, 1937, according to the doctrine of the Portuguese Constitution of 1933, and the restructuring of assistance in the district of Vila Real achieved by its governor, Assis Gonçalves; in a second stage, under the legislation produced by the State in the last two decades – in 1990, the Misericórdia received the legal status of Private Social Solidarity Institution.
Accordingly, in 1937, the Misericórdia created the School of Arts and Crafts; in 1940, the School-Residence Florinhas da Neve (Snow Flowers); in 1987, the Immaculate Conception Retirement Home, a Nursery school and a Kindergarten; in 1989, a Leisure Activities Centre; in 1992, the Juvenile Home; in 1999, the Integrated Support Unit; in 2003, the Residence-Hotel; and in 2009, the Social Canteen.
